Lady Gaga, Part One: Behind Her Poker Face

As a short introduction, I need to warn you that I'm really going to get deep into some things. Meanings behind lyrics that are frankly, quite sexual and might prove to be offensive. I just needed to put a disclaimer up, so you will be prepared! Please, read cautiously and, as always, with an open mind! 

Gaudy hairstyles, clothes made of metal and plastic, upbeat tunes with strangely hypnotic lyrics. One of the biggest female music sensations of the century with her dress made out of fake meat and her lit cigarette covered sunglasses. Yes, I think you know who I mean. (Especially since the title was a dead give away) Lady Gaga. The superstar who appears to have set a trend that all female artists have fallen into. From the bizarre fashions, to the less than normal lyrics of their songs, Lady Gaga seems to have set the bar for modern pop music. She's sold millions of CDs, made billions of fans, and dominated nearly every radio station that I turn on. (Except country, but I personally do not roll that way. Sorry, Alabama.) While, I was not particularly a fan, sticking to people who looked a little more. . . Normal, shall we say, I did often find myself enjoying her songs. Not necessarily because of the lyrics; I callously denied their little inappropriate messages. Mostly because, in all honesty, her songs are catchy. However, the woman behind the songs and the messages in the words themselves are very harmful. From promoting promiscuous behavior to homosexuality to going so far as to make a mockery of Jesus in her music video for her song "Judas". Let's start from the top and go from there.

In an recent interview, Lady Gaga talked about the meaning behind some of her lyrics for the song "Poker Face". In that particular song there is a line that says, "I won't tell you that I love you, kiss or hug you, 'cause I'm bluffing with my muffin" (which, for those of you who are not familiar with the word, is a term for a lady's private part.Yes. You can probably figure it out from there.) Lady Gaga admitted that she wrote that line from the experience of having sex with her boyfriend and imagining that she was with a woman instead. The meaning behind "bluffing with her muffin" are pretty clear now, huh?

Intro Part Two: Garbage in, Garbage out

In Matthew 12:34 it says, ". . . how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the

heart the mouth speaks." That was Jesus's way of saying "garbage in, garbage out", and when you think about it, you can't really deny it's truth. When you hang around friends who swear and speak bad about others, of course you're going to follow along. The same applies to the music you listen to. When you listen to the same lyrics, spilling the same message day in and day out, you will become more and more like the artists portrayal of how they live their lives. Am I saying that all secular music is wrong and that you should only listen to hymns? Certainly not! I love me some Attack! Attack! and Colbie Calliat just as much as the next girl. (Two extremes, I know, but just for examples.)  The line does need to be drawn somewhere, however, and when your mind and heart are under attack by words that promote things that common sense and conscience tells you is wrong, draw it there! Don't continue on and become so hard hearted that eventually your ability to pick out right from wrong vanishes. It's really hard to get it back, trust me! I understand how my Bible quoting and conscience invasion can be a little hard to take in and annoying for some of you out there, but I am asking you to please give my blog a try. It's my hope that just one person out there will read it and be changed like I was about my views on the mainstream movement. Whether you believe in God or not, I pray that somehow He will do a great work in my blog and I use it all to His glory! So, with that said, I suppose I'll end this intro and get to the real core of the blog. Reviewing popular artists and their music. Keep an open mind!!

Intro Part One: Been There, Done That

To start, I would like to point out that I was not someone who was raised Amish, or in an incredibly sheltered home where music wasn't allowed or anything like that. I heard my share of secular music growing up and the older I got the more risque and morbid my music selections became. I fell pretty hard into a lot of music that no one in their right mind should be listening to, and looking back it almost freaks me out that I was so calloused to what I heard in the lyrics that I began thinking that acts of anger and sometimes violence, sexual promiscuity, and hardcore swearing were OK. And in today's society, yes, they often are. However, that does not make them right. Although I don't believe that music is the only cause of immorality, I do believe that it plays an enormous part in the downfall of the young men and women in the world today.

Believe me, music does play a great part in the way you live your life. If you choose to listen to music that spouts out lyrics full of violence and sexual immorality, you will be more likely to live that type of lifestyle. Some of the secular music I listened to transformed me to into a person that my friends and family didn't even recognize. I began to become very bitter and aggressive towards my parents and sister. I chose friends who pulled me down even more. I began getting deep into self mutilation. So many things that I know were cause by the infulence of the music that I was listening to, playing off my own sinful nature.
